have been written on a titulus (placard) carried along in
Caesar's triumph after a campaign in Pontus (Asia Minor) during the civil war (46 ). Quoted in Suetonius Lives
of the Twelve Caesars,'Divus Iulius', section 37. Another
source reports that Caesar used this expression in a
letter to the Senate after the same campaign (cf
Plutarch, Caesar 50, 3-4).
