Remember the "Give a hoot, don't pollute!" motto popularized by the US Forest Service in their 1965-1985 public service announcements featuring Woodsy Owl? A snappy saying can really help get a message across. Unfortunately, quotes about pollution from activists, academics, politicians, and community leaders show that we’re still not doing enough to curb pollution.
Love is in the air but the air is highly polluted.
Former principal of Scottish Church College, Kolkata, India

I always saw pollution as theft, and I always thought, 'Why should somebody be able to pollute the air, which belongs to all of us, or destroy a river or waterway, which is supposed to belong to the whole community?'robert f. kennedy
I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security. Defense of our resources is just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise what is there to defend?Robert Redford

We've already done terrible damage to our planet, but we can still play our small part recycling at home and encourage governments to implement policies to prevent causing future harm. As Barry Commoner, a leading ecologist and one of the founders of the modern environmental movement, stated, "Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented."
Taking action on a problem as widespread as pollution isn't easy, but aren’t we're morally obligated to try? Talking about the problem and then going back to our destructive habits isn't enough. As American businessman, philanthropist, and politician Ross Perot said in a memorable pollution quote, "The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river."
Protecting the environment may require making widespread changes in our daily habits and applying creating problem solving techniques to issues such as reducing carbon emissions and curbing the flow of disposable goods into our overburdened landfills. This is a challenge that many leaders in our country feel we are equipped to face if we come together collectively. In a 2009 Huffington Post blog post, US Senator Bernie Sanders wrote, "I see a future where getting to work or to school or to the store does not have to cause pollution." This vision of the future is one we all deserve.
