Mean Girls chronicles the experiences of Cady Heron, a 16-year-old homeschooled student, as she enters the world of public school. She becomes part of the Plastics, a clique of popular girls who rule by spreading rumors, secrets, gossip, and insults about their fellow students. The Plastics have their own strict rules for membership, including mandatory fashion choices. "On Wednesdays, we wear pink," bubbly airhead Karen Smith, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried, explains to Cady when the Plastics decide to make her part of the group.
Cady, portrayed by Lindsay Lohan, eventually sees through the superficial and mean-spirited antics of the popular girls and urges her classmates to do the same. In one of the most inspiring scenes of the film, she shares a lesson teens everywhere should take to heart. "Calling somebody else fat won't make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn't make you any smarter."
After becoming a box office success, Mean Girls spawned several new slang terms to describe the experience of young high school girls. For example, Gretchen Weiners, portrayed by Lacey Chabert, is a rich but insecure member of the Plastics who points out that the people you think are your friends aren't always what they seem. "Frenemies are enemies who act like friends,” she said.
