Since basketball is, by nature, a competitive sport, players must eventually come to terms with the fact they can't win every game. Michael Jordan rose to fame playing for the Chicago Bulls and is considered by many to be one of the world's greatest players. Even so, he stresses that he has experienced his fair share of failure. "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games, 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed," he said.
When they retire from the game, professional basketball players often begin coaching. However, making this transition isn't always easy. Larry Bird took up coaching after retiring from the Boston Celtics, serving as head coach of the Indiana Pacers from 1997 to 2000. "I was always making decisions and they were easier decisions because I had control of the game, I had control of the ball. As a coach, you sort of put the ball in other player's hands and let them make decisions for you. But I still get a kick out of winning basketball games and that's what I'm in this for," he said.
