For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?jane austen
In love as in sport, the amateur status must be strictly maintained.
No man likes to see his emotions the sport of a merry- go-round of skittishness.thomas hardy
Alas! What boots it with uncessant care To tend the homely slighted Shepherd's trade, And strictly meditate the thankless muse; Were it not better done as others use, To sport with Amaryllis in the shade, Or with the tangles of Neaera's hair? Fame is the spur that the clear spirit doth raise (That last infirmity of noble mind) To scorn delights, and live laborious days; But the fair guerdon when we hope to find, And think to burst out into sudden blaze, Comes the blind Fury with th'abhorred shears, And slits the thin-spun life.john milton
Quand je me jou e« a' ma chatte, qui s c° ait si elle passe son temps de moy plus que je ne fay d'elle? When I play with my cat, who knows whether I do not make her more sport than she makes me?
Our noisy years seem moments in the being Of the eternal silence: truths that wake, To perish never: Which neither listlessness, nor mad endeavour, Nor man nor boy, Nor all that is at enmity with joy, Can utterlyabolish or destroy! Hence in a season of calm weather, Though inland far we be, Our souls have sight of that immortal sea Which brought us hither, Can in a moment travel thither, And see the children sport upon the shore, And hear the mighty waters rolling evermore.william wordsworth
I love sport because I love life, and sport is one of the basic joys of life.
In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.pierre de coubertin
Some write their wrongs in marble: he more just,Stoop’d down serene and wrote them in the dust,—Trod under foot, the sport of every wind,Swept from the earth and blotted from his mind. There, secret in the grave, he bade them lie,And grieved they could not ’scape the Almighty eye.samuel madden
Football is a team sport, and there is no one individual who is bigger than the next person.emmitt smith
Our so-called Society people, instead of going in for sport, persist in holding conversations in their drawing rooms, generally in a foreign tongue. They engage nurse maids, personal maids and governesses of all nationalities except Italian. They play poker and bridge with the accompanying drinks, certainly not Italian brands!achille starace
The individual, by means of the discipline imposed on him by sport, not only plays and finds relaxation from the various compulsions to which he is subjected, but without knowing it trains himself for new compulsions. ... Training in sports makes of the individual an efficient piece of apparatus which is henceforth unacquainted with anything but the harsh joys of exploiting his body and winning.jacques ellul
sport carries on without deviation the mechanical tradition of furnishing relief and distraction to the worker after he has finished his work proper so that he is at no time independent of one technique or another. In sport the citizen of the technical society finds the same spirit, criteria, morality, actions and objectives in short, all the technical laws and customs which he encounters in office or factory.jacques ellul
Democracy is not a spectator sport, it's a participatory event. If we don't participate in it, it ceases to be a democracy. So Obama will rise or fall based not so much on what he does but on what we do to support him.Michael Moore
If, as many anthropologists still hold, the making and using of tools as one of the chief sources of primitive man's intellectual development, is it not time that we asked ourselves what will happen to man if he departs as completely as he now threatens to do from his primal polytechnic occupations? Since they can no longer be pursued at a profit, perhaps they will have to be restored as modes of sport and recreation, even more as helpful increasingly essential forms of personal service and mutual aid.Lewis Mumford
If all the year were playing holidays, To sport would be as tedious as to work.william shakespeare
The expansion (i.e. projection) and the contraction (i.e. dissolution ) of the universe are called lila (the divine sport) in Hindu scriptures. In this divine play, the One becomes many and the many return into the One in endless rhythmic fashion.
Some write their wrongs in marble: he more just, Stoop’d down serene and wrote them in the dust, Trod under foot, the sport of every wind, Swept from the earth and blotted from his mind. There, secret in the grave, he bade them lie, And grieved they could not ’scape the Almighty eye.
...the veil is a symbol of sexual apartheid and the segregation of the sexes. In countries where Islam rules, like in Iran , the separate entrances for women in certain government offices; separate areas for women’s seating on buses for example; the banning of women from certain public arenas like sport stadiums; a curtain dividing the Caspian sea for segregated swimming and so on is what it means in practice to be a female under Islam. That people transgress these rules daily is a testimony to their humanity and not the laws or state that imposes it by force.
Sledging is not required in cricket. It's not good for the game, cricket is a gentleman's game, not a contact sport. We don't see why there should be any abusive language at all.
Detested sport, That owes its pleasures to another's pain .william cowper
Even bear-baiting was esteemed heathenish and unchristian: the sport of it, not the inhumanity, gave offence.David Hume
sport, rightly conceived, is an occupation carried out by the whole man. It renders the body a more perfect instrument of the soul and at the same time makes the soul itself a finer instrument of the whole man in seeking forTruth and in transmitting it to others. In this way it helps a man to reach that End to which all other ends are subordinate, the service and the greater glory of his Creator.
