An ideological movement is a collection of people many of whom could hardly bake a cake, fix a car, sustain a friendship or a marriage, or even do a quadratic equation, yet they believe they know how to rule the world. The university, in which it is possible to combine theoretical pretension with comprehensive ineptitude, has become the natural habitat of the ideological enthusiast. A kind of adventure playground, carefully insulated from reality in order to prevent absent-minded professors from bumping into things as they explore transcendental realms, has become the institutional base for civilizational self-hatred.
The number one problem in academia today is not ignorant students but ignorant Professors, who have substituted narrow “expertise” and “theoretical sophistication” (a preposterous term) for breadth and depth of learning in the world history of art and thought. … Art is a vast, ancient interconnected web-work, a fabricated tradition. Overconcentration on any one point is a distortion. This is one of the primary reasons for the dullness and ineptitude of so much twentieth-criticism, as compared to nineteenth-century belles-lettres.camille paglia
Professors of humanities, with all their leftist fantasies, have little direct knowledge of American life and no impact whatever on public policy.camille paglia
Economic analysis is the first principle of Marxism. Professors who were genuine leftists would have challenged the entire economics-driven machinery of American academe the wasteful multidepartmental structure, the divisive pedantry of overspecialization, the cronyism and sycophancy in recruitment and promotion, the boondoggling ostentation of pointless conferences, the exploitation of graduate students and part-time teachers, the subservience of faculty to overpaid administrators, the mediocrity and folly of the ruling cliques of the Modern Language Association.camille paglia
Professors rarely speak of the place of eros or the erotic in our classrooms. Trained in the philosophical context of Western metaphysical dualism, many of us have accepted the notion that there is a split between the body and the mind. Believing this, individuals enter the classroom to teach as though only the mind is present, and not the body.bell hooks
Our American Professors like their literature clear and cold and pure and very dead.
I was truly sorry for Mr. Bryan. But I consoled myself by thinking of the years through which he had busied himself tormenting intelligent Professors with impudent questions about their faith, and seeking to arouse the ignoramuses and bigots to drive them out of their positions.clarence darrow
In 1969, nationwide, female Professors who had never been married and never published earned 145% of their counterpart male colleagues.warren farrell
The proverbial German phenomenon of the verb-at-the-end about which droll tales of absentminded Professors who would begin a sentence, ramble on for an entire lecture, and then finish up by rattling off a string of verbs by which their audience, for whom the stack had long since lost its coherence, would be totally nonplussed, are told, is an excellent example of linguistic recursion.douglas hofstadter
I would never use a long word, even, where a short one would answer the purpose. I know there are Professors in this country who 'ligate' arteries. Other surgeons only tie them, and it stops the bleeding just as well.
Academic education is the act of memorizing things read in books, and things told by college Professors who got their education mostly by memorizing things read in books.elbert hubbard
If I gave it all up immediately, I'd lose my immortality. I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the Professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality.james joyce
No book can teach you about yourself, no psychologist, none of the Professors or philosophers. What they can teach you is what they think you are or what they think you should be.jiddu krishnamurti
Lacan is a tyrant who must be driven from our shores. Narrowly trained English Professors who know nothing of art history or popular culture think they can just wade in with Lacan and trash everything in sight.camille paglia
I realize now how lucky I was, in the total absence of role models, to have only men to rebel against. Today's women students are meeting their oppressors in dangerously seductive new form, as successful congenial female Professors who view themselves as victims of a rigid foreign ideology.camille paglia
The venerable emeritus Professors still at Yale when I entered graduate school [in the 1960s] may have been reserved, puritanical WASPs, but they were men of honor who had given their lives to scholarship. Today in the elite schools, honor and ethics are gone.camille paglia
The young man [Turgot] destined for an ecclesiastical career was placed within walls carefully designed to keep out all currents of new thought; his studies, his reading, his Professors, his associates, all were combined to keep from him any results of observation or reflection save those prescribed: probably, of all means for stifling healthy and helpful thought, a theological seminary, as then conducted whether Catholic or Protestant, Jewish or Mohammedan, was the most perfect.Andrew Dickson White
Some conservatives have expressed outrage that the views of Professors are at odds with the views of students, as if ideas were entitled to be represented in proportion to their popularity and students were entitled to Professors who share their political or social values. One of the more important functions of college that it exposes young people to ideas and arguments they have not encountered at home is redefined as a problem.ellen willis
In our day, the scribes and Pharisees would be represented by the clergy, the Professors in our theological seminaries, and all high church officials.
The presence of irony does not necessarily mean that the earnestness is excluded. Only assistant Professors assume that.
One of the characteristics of the university is that it is made up of Professors who train Professors, or professionals training professionals. Education was this no longer directed toward people who were to be educated with a view to become fully developed human beings, but to specialists, in other that they might learn how to train other specialists. This is the danger of “Scholasticism,” that philosophical tendency which began to be sketched at the end of antiquity, developed in the Middle Ages, and whose presence is still recognizable in philosophy today.pierre hadot
Two universities have been founded in this country, amply endowed and furnished with Professors in the different sciences; and I should be sorry that those who have been educated at either of them should undervalue the benefits of such an education.
The Christian religion is from heaven. The gates of hell shall not prevail against it, and its Professors are not afraid of its being examined. It has stood for eighteen hundred years, and it will stand long.
