I want to see people using Perl to glue things together creatively, not just technically but also socially.
The only disadvantage I see is that it would force everyone to get Perl. Horrors.larry wall
The camel has evolved to be relatively self-sufficient. (On the other hand, the camel has not evolved to smell good. Neither has Perl.)
Perl is another example of filling a tiny, short-term need, and then being a real problem in the longer term. Basically, a lot of the problems that computing has had in the last 25 years comes from systems where the designers were trying to fix some short-term thing and didn’t think about whether the idea would scale if it were adopted. There should be a half-life on software so old software just melts away over 10 or 15 years.alan kay
A novice had a problem and could not find a solution. "I know," said the novice, "I'll just use Perl!" The novice now had two problems.erik naggum
What I actually admire in Perl is its ability to provide a very successful abstraction of the horrible mess that is collectively called Unix.erik naggum
Let's just hope that all the world is run by Bill Gates before the Perl hackers can destroy it.erik naggum
Those days are dead and gone and the eulogy was delivered by Perl.rob pike
There are many times when you want it to ignore the rest of the string just like atof() does. Oddly enough, Perl calls atof(). How convenient.larry wall
The whole intent of Perl 5's module system was to encourage the growth of Perl culture rather than the Perl core.larry wall
I think you didn't get a reply because you used the terms 'correct' and 'proper', neither of which has much meaning in Perl culture.larry wall
Any false value is gonna be fairly boring in Perl, mathematicians notwithstanding.larry wall
It's certainly easy to calculate the average attendance for Perl conferences.larry wall
Historically Tcl has always stored all intermediate results as strings. (With 8.0 they're rethinking that. Of course, Perl rethought that from the start.)larry wall
Well, you can implement a Perl peek() with unpack('P',...). Once you have that, there's only security through obscurity.larry wall
It may be possible to get this condition from within Perl if a signal handler runs at just the wrong moment. Another point for Chip...larry wall
:;: I could understand principles of Perl source in 2-3 days [. . .] Gee, it took me about eleven years.larry wall
Perhaps you should compile your Perl with long doubles one of these megaseconds.larry wall
And besides, if Perl really takes off in the Windows space, I think the rest of us would just as soon have a double-agent within ActiveState.larry wall
The court finds everyone to be in contempt (including himself:;:-), and orders everyone sentenced to five years hard labor. (Working on Perl, of course.)larry wall
The Largest Disservice to LISP is most frequently done whenever a LISP advocate opens his/her mouth. LISP advocates have been, in my limited and biased experience, some of the most arrogant and condescending bastards in the world. (…) I have heard more than one LISP advocate state such subjective comments as, "LISP is the most powerful and elegant programming language in the world" and expect such comments to be taken as objective truth. I have never heard a Java , C++, C, Perl , or Python advocate make the same claim about their own language of choice.
Perl is the most popular web programming language. Over a million people program with Perl. That is approximately one Perl programmer for every resident of Hyderabad, Pakistan or Donetsk, Ukraine.
Perl is the most popular language for creating CGI programs. Perl is the acronym for Practical Extraction and Report Language. Every computer platform supports this language and hence widely used.
Although the Perl Slogan is There's More Than One Way to Do It, I hesitate to make 10 ways to do something.
A Perl script is "correct" if it gets the job done before your boss fires you.
[Boxed] Multiple bouncing balls in a box are a metaphor for community. Notice how the escaping balls explode. This is what happens to people who move from Perl to Ruby .
