Create all the happiness you are able to create: remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you to add something to the pleasure of others, or to diminish something of their pains. And for every grain of enjoyment you sow in the bosom of another, you shall find a harvest in your own bosom; while every sorrow which you pluck out from the thoughts and feelings of a fellow creature shall be replaced by beautiful Peace and joy in the sanctuary of your soul.

jeremy bentham

— Advise to a young girl (22 June 1830)

Not every painter has a gift for painting, in fact, many painters are disappointed when they meet with difficulties in art. Painting done under pressure by artists without the necessary talent can only give rise to formlessness, as painting is a profession that requires Peace of mind. The painter must always seek the essence of things, always represent the essential characteristics and emotions of the person he is painting...

titian

— As quoted in The Quotable Artist (2002) by Peggy Hadden, p. 71
— Variant: They who are compelled to paint by force, without being in the necessary mood, can produce only ungainly works, because this profession requires an unruffled temper. As quoted in The Quotable Artist (2002) by Peggy Hadden, p. 72

For me personally and for most other Americans, this commitment to Peace and diplomacy does not imply a blind or total pacifism. There are times when war is justified, and for many centuries the moral criteria for violence have been carefully delineated.

That the people have a Right to mass and to bear arms; that a well regulated militia composed of the Body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper natural and safe defense of a free state, that standing armies, in time of Peace, are dangerous to liberty, and therefore ought to be avoided.

I dreamed a place where I have come to dwell
Cold Mountain says it all
Monkeys scream, the valley fog is cold
My door blends with the color of the peaks
I gather leaves and thatch a hut among the pines
Dig a pond and lead a trickle from the brook
Long ago I left the world behind
Eating ferns I pass the years in Peace

My attitude to Peace is rather based on the Burmese definition of Peace - it really means removing all the negative factors that destroy Peace in this world. So Peace does not mean just putting an end to violence or to war, but to all other factors that threaten Peace, such as discrimination, such as inequality, poverty.

— Aung San Suu Kyi, in Suu Kyi gives Nobel speech in Norway, 21 years later

Sir Henry Wotton?was also a most dear lover, and a frequent practiser of the art of angling; of which he would say,'it was anemployment forhisidletime?a rest to his mind, a cheerer of his spirits, a diverter of sadness, a calmer of unquiet thoughts, a moderator of passions, a procurer of contentedness; and that it begat habits of Peace and patience in those that professed and practised it.'

Life, if we would mark it, is made up of thousands of suggestions from some unseen quarter, prompting us to duty; starting some thought of what is wise and right and just and good; inclining us to thoughtfulness, to meditation, to prayer; making the soul dissatisfied with its present course, and drawing it along in the path of duty, benevolence, and Peace.

The things you hear now about European unemployment -- that there are structural problems, that real wages have failed to adjust, that there are inflationary fears -- are the same things that were said during the early 1930. It is well established that government spending began to pull Germany out of its slump in 1935. There is no known reason why spending for Peace can't do as well at getting the economy going as spending for war.
