I still have a struggle reading (dyslexia, fh) and so I don’t read much... Probably the only reason I’m a painter is because I couldn’t read yet I love to write, but when I write I know what I’m writing, but when I’m reading I can’t see it, because it goes from all sides of the page at once. But that’s very good for printmaking.
Every good painter who aspires to the creation of genuine masterpieces should first of all marry my wife.
Selection is the invention of the landscape painter.Henry Fuseli
At a certain moment the canvas began to appear to one American painter after another as an arena in which to actrather than as a space in which to reproduce, re-design, analyze or 'express'an object, actual or imagined. What was to go on the canvas was not a picture but an event.Harold Rosenberg
No person who is not a great sculptor or painter can be an architect. If he is not a sculptor or painter, he can only be a builder.john ruskin
I was never the kind of painter or sculptor who kept a shop.michelangelo
Whilst a Face painter is harassed to death a drapery painter sits & earns 5 or 6 hundered a year & laughs all the whilethomas gainsborough
Futurism and Cubism are comparable in importance tot the invention of perspective, for which they substituted a new concept op space. All subsequent movements were latent in them or brought about by them... the two movements cannot be regarded as in opposition to each other, even though they started from opposite points; I maintain (an idea approved by Apollinaire and later by Matisse) that they are two extremes of the same sign, tending to coincide at certain points which only the poetic instinct of the painter can discover: poetry being the content and raison d’être of art.gino severini
A painter paints his pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence. We provide the music, and you provide the silence.leopold stokowski
The painter celebrates life where he finds it. His morality is the morality of enjoyment, of the continuous development of his own taste without shame or fear. It is a sort of heroism.patrick swift
The organizer who creates roles, who creates the holes that will force the pegs to their shape, is a prime creator of personality itself. When we ask of a man, "What is he?" the answer is usually given in terms of his major role, job, or position in society; he is the place that he fills, a painter, a priest, a politician, a criminal.kenneth boulding
Einstein's space is no closer to reality than Van Gogh's sky . The glory of science is not in a truth more absolute than the truth of Bach or Tolstoy, but in the act of creation itself. The scientist's discoveries impose his own order on chaos, as the composer or painter imposes his; an order that always refers to limited aspects of reality, and is based on the observer's frame of reference, which differs from period to period as a Rembrant nude differs from a nude by Manet.Arthur Koestler
I was making very aggressive provocative paintings. Whether the Rachel paintings, or the Diana paintings, I've sensed over the three or four years that I've been in getting press attention, I've sensed that it has not been that long since the woman painter was not allowed in the Royal Academy, and not allowed to paint nude men, and thee is such a huge body of work that men have made, versus the small body of work made by women, that I am not surprised to get this response.stella vine
In academia, ...an art historian, on being stirred to tears by the tenderness and serenity he detects in a work by a fourteenth-century Florentine painter, may end up writing a monograph, as irreproachable as it is bloodless, on the history of paint manufacture in the age of Giotto. It seems easier to respond to our enthusiasms by trading in facts than by investigating the more naive question of how and why we have been moved.Alain de Botton
If it is the love of that which your work represents if, being a landscape painter, it is love of hills and trees that moves you if, being a figure painter, it is love of human beauty, and human soul that moves you if, being a flower or animal painter, it is love, and wonder, and delight in petal and in limb that move you, then the Spirit is upon you, and the earth is yours, and the fullness thereof.john ruskin
Ford is rather a sculptor of character than a painter.
O thou sculptor, painter, poet, Take this lesson to thy heart; That is best which lieth nearest; Shape from that thy work of art.
An architect should live as little in cities as a painter. Send him to our hills, and let him study there what nature understands by a buttress, and what by a dome. There was something in the old power of architecture, which it had from the recluse more than from the citizen.
'I almost wish I were not a painter,' observed my companion.'Why so? one would think at such a time you would most exult in your privilege of being able to imitate the various brilliant and delightful touches of nature.'No; for instead of delivering myself up to the full enjoyment of them as others do, I am always troubling my head about how I could produce the same effect upon canvas; and as that can never be done, it is more vanity and vexation of spirit.'anne brontë
The only 'penile portrait painter' in the world.
He that would be a painter must have a natural turn thereto.Love and delight are better teachers of the Art of Painting than compulsion is.Albrecht Du« r er
With hue like that when some great painter dips His pencil in the gloom of earthquake and eclipse.Percy Bysshe Shelley
The painter thinks in terms of form and color. The goal is not to be concerned with the reconstitution of an anecdotal fact, but with constitution of a pictorial fact.Georges Braque
In the early days the Cubists’ method of grasping an object was to go round and round it; the futurists declared that one had to get inside it. In my opinion the two views can be reconciled in a poetic cognition of the world. But to the very fact that they appealed to the creative depths in the painter by awakening in him hidden forces which were intuitive and vitalizing, the Futurist theories did more than the Cubist principles to open up unexplored and boundless horizons.gino severini
People get a bad impression of it by continually trying to treat it as if it was a bank clerk, who ought to be on time on Tuesday next, instead of philosophically seeing it as a painter, who may do anything so long as you don't try to predict what.Katharine Whitehorn
There is no such thing as a dumb poet or a handless painter. The essence of an artist is that he should be articulate.algernon charles swinburne
