I still have a struggle reading (dyslexia, fh) and so I don’t read much... Probably the only reason I’m a painter is because I couldn’t read yet I love to write, but when I write I know what I’m writing, but when I’m reading I can’t see it, because it goes from all sides of the page at once. But that’s very good for printmaking.
La volaille est pour la cuisine ce qu'est la toile pour les peintres. Fowls are to the kitchen what his canvas is to the painter.Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
Every good painter who aspires to the creation of genuine masterpieces should first of all marry my wife.
Le style, pour l'e crivain aussi bien que pour le peintre, est une question non de technique mais de vision. For the writer as well as for the painter, style is not a question of technique, but of vision.Marcel Proust
At a certain moment the canvas began to appear to one American painter after another as an arena in which to actrather than as a space in which to reproduce, re-design, analyze or 'express'an object, actual or imagined. What was to go on the canvas was not a picture but an event.Harold Rosenberg
What is a portrait good for, unless it shows just how the subject was seen by the painter? In the old days before photography came in a sitter had a perfect right to say to the artist: "Paint me just as I am." Now if he wishes absolute fidelity he can go to the photographer and get it.aubrey beardsley
I was never the kind of painter or sculptor who kept a shop.michelangelo
The poet and the painter are only truly great by the mutual influences of their studies, and the jealousy of glory has only produced an idle contest.isaac d'israeli
Whilst a Face painter is harassed to death a drapery painter sits & earns 5 or 6 hundered a year & laughs all the whilethomas gainsborough
It isn’t up to the painter to define the symbols. Otherwise it would be better if he wrote them out in so many words! The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they understand them.pablo picasso
Futurism and Cubism are comparable in importance tot the invention of perspective, for which they substituted a new concept op space. All subsequent movements were latent in them or brought about by them... the two movements cannot be regarded as in opposition to each other, even though they started from opposite points; I maintain (an idea approved by Apollinaire and later by Matisse) that they are two extremes of the same sign, tending to coincide at certain points which only the poetic instinct of the painter can discover: poetry being the content and raison d’être of art.gino severini
A painter paints his pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence. We provide the music, and you provide the silence.leopold stokowski
As a painter, cursed or blessed with a terrible and vital sensuousness, I must look for wisdom with my eyes. I repeat, with my eyes, for nothing could be more ridiculous or irrelevant than a 'philosophical conception painted purely intellectually without the terrible fury of the senses grasping each visible form of beauty and ugliness.max beckmann
The organizer who creates roles, who creates the holes that will force the pegs to their shape, is a prime creator of personality itself. When we ask of a man, "What is he?" the answer is usually given in terms of his major role, job, or position in society; he is the place that he fills, a painter, a priest, a politician, a criminal.kenneth boulding
I regard criticism as an art, and if in this country and in this age it is practiced with honesty, it is no more remunerative than the work of an avant-garde film artist. My dear anonymous letter writers, if you think it is so easy to be a critic, so difficult to be a poet or a painter or film experimenter, may I suggest you try both? You may discover why there are so few critics, so many poets.Pauline Kael
Einstein's space is no closer to reality than Van Gogh's sky . The glory of science is not in a truth more absolute than the truth of Bach or Tolstoy, but in the act of creation itself. The scientist's discoveries impose his own order on chaos, as the composer or painter imposes his; an order that always refers to limited aspects of reality, and is based on the observer's frame of reference, which differs from period to period as a Rembrant nude differs from a nude by Manet.Arthur Koestler
All those people who derided me did me a favour, because now I don't care what anyone says about me. I feel I am now able to be a really powerful painter, to take on the mantle of the US male expressionist.stella vine
I was making very aggressive provocative paintings. Whether the Rachel paintings, or the Diana paintings, I've sensed over the three or four years that I've been in getting press attention, I've sensed that it has not been that long since the woman painter was not allowed in the Royal Academy, and not allowed to paint nude men, and thee is such a huge body of work that men have made, versus the small body of work made by women, that I am not surprised to get this response.stella vine
A flattering painter, who made it his care To draw men as they ought to be, not as they are.Oliver Goldsmith
If it is the love of that which your work represents if, being a landscape painter, it is love of hills and trees that moves you if, being a figure painter, it is love of human beauty, and human soul that moves you if, being a flower or animal painter, it is love, and wonder, and delight in petal and in limb that move you, then the Spirit is upon you, and the earth is yours, and the fullness thereof.john ruskin
Thou art a strange fellow: a tailor make a man? Ay, a tailor, sir; a stone-cutter or a painter could not have made him so ill, though he had been but two hours at the trade.william shakespeare
Ford is rather a sculptor of character than a painter.
O thou sculptor, painter, poet, Take this lesson to thy heart; That is best which lieth nearest; Shape from that thy work of art.
A fresh river in a beautiful meadowImagined in his mindThe good painter, who would some day paint itjeff vandermeer
'I almost wish I were not a painter,' observed my companion.'Why so? one would think at such a time you would most exult in your privilege of being able to imitate the various brilliant and delightful touches of nature.'No; for instead of delivering myself up to the full enjoyment of them as others do, I am always troubling my head about how I could produce the same effect upon canvas; and as that can never be done, it is more vanity and vexation of spirit.'anne brontë
The only 'penile portrait painter' in the world.
