We want better reasons for having children than not knowing how to prevent them. Nor should we represent motherhood as something so common and easy that everyone can go through it without harm or suffering and rear her children competently and well.
Motherhood will only be a joyous and responsible human act when women are free to make, with full conscious choice and full human responsibility, the decisions to become mothers.
Sometimes the strength of Motherhood is greater than natural laws.barbara kingsolver
Quite as many false ideas prevail as to woman's true position in the home as to her status elsewhere. Womanhood is the great fact in her life; wifehood and Motherhood are but incidental relations.
What had really caused the women’s movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century women’s life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldn’t live all those years in terms of Motherhood alone was “the problem that had no name.” Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.betty friedan
Birth control itself, often denounced as a violation of natural law, is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit, of preventing the birth of defectives or of those who will become defectives. So, in compliance with nature’s working plan, we must permit womanhood its full development before we can expect of it efficient Motherhood. If we are to make racial progress, this development of womanhood must precede Motherhood in every individual woman.margaret sanger
We are, as a sex, infinitely superior to men, and if we were free and developed, healthy in body and mind, as we should be under natural conditions, our Motherhood would be our glory. That function gives women such wisdom and power as no male can possess.elizabeth cady stanton
May God help us to prepare a dwelling place for this noble birth, so that we may all attain spiritual Motherhood
A group of women who valued Motherhood, but valued it on their own timetable , began to make a new claim, one that had never surfaced in the abortion debate before this, that abortion was a woman's right . Most significantly, they argued that this right to abortion was essential to their right to equality -- the right to be treated as individuals rather than as potential mothers.
A huge part of keeping women in their place has to do with creating a really limited definition of what a 'real' woman is like. And a ton of that what-makes-a-woman nonsense is attached to Motherhood . Apparently, by virtue of having ovaries and a uterus, women are automatic mommies or mommies-to-be.
The art of Motherhood involves much silent, unobtrusive self-denial, an hourly devotion which finds no detail too minute.
When Motherhood becomes the fruit of a deep yearning, not the result of ignorance or accident, its children will become the foundation of a new race. There will be no killing of babies in the womb by abortion, nor through neglect in foundling homes, nor will there be infanticide.
