I love to read the dedications of old books written in monarchies for they invariably honor some (usually insignificant) knight or duke with fulsome words of sycophantic insincerity, praising him as the light of the universe (in hopes, no doubt, for a few ducats to support future work); this old practice makes me feel like such an honest and upright man, by comparison, when I put a positive spin, perhaps ever so slightly exaggerated, on a grant proposal.
On n'est jamais si malheureux qu'on croit, ni si heureux qu'on espe' re. One is never as unhappyas one thinks, nor as happy as one hopes.
What we should do, I suggest, is to give up the idea of ultimate sources of knowledge, and admit that all knowledge is human; that it is mixed with our errors, our prejudices, our dreams, and our hopes; that all we can doistogrope for truth even though it be beyond our reach.
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the pretender. He knows that all his hopes and dreams begin and end there.jackson browne
For what did the creator prepare me,Why did he so terribly contradictThe hopes of my youth?...mikhail lermontov
To the earth I gave the earthly tribute. Of love, hopes, good and evil; I am ready to begin another life, I am silent and wait: the time has come; I shall leave no brother in this world; And dark and cold embrace my tired soul; Like a premature fruit, deprived of sap, It withered in the storms of fate under the burning sun of existence.mikhail lermontov
A culture is not only the language and the arts of a people. It is all their history, all their hopes for the future.pierre stephen robert payne
He ploughs in sand, and sows against the wind, That hopes for constant love of woman kind.thomas fuller
The person who wants nothing, hopes for nothing, and fears nothing can never be an artist.Anton Chekhov
It's that mix of passion and pragmatism that Feingold hopes will appeal to Democratic voters looking for a fresh-faced truth-teller come 2008. Feingold's career has been defined by his crusader nature, but it's his skills as a conciliator -- with conviction -- that may be most important for his hopes of capturing his party's nomination.russ feingold
Holding fast to these things, you will know the worlds of gods and mortals which permeates and governs everything. And you will know, as is right, nature similar in all respects, so that you will neither entertain unreasonable hopes nor be neglectful of anything.pythagoras
If the United States and the United Nations truly want peace and security let them fulfill the hopes of the common people everywhere – let them work together to accomplish on a worldwide scale, precisely the kind of democratic association of free people which characterizes the Soviet Union today.Paul Robeson
Sensible of his ill-desert and helplessness, persuaded of the all-sufficiency of the Redeemer, the believer therefore makes a voluntary surrender of himself into the hands of Christ, to be saved upon His own terms. He relinquishes his vain confidences, and places all his hopes on Christ. He casts himself into His arms. " Lord, to whom shall I go but to Thee?"gardiner spring
A man not perfect, but of heart So high, of such heroic rage, That even his hopes became a part Of earth's eternal heritage.
In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart . I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death .
Thou hast prevaricated with thy friend, By underhand contrivances undone me: And while my open nature trusted in thee, Thou hast slept in between me and my hopes, And ravish'd from me all my soul held dear. Thou hast betray'd me.nicholas rowe
What, know you not, old man (quoth he) Your hair is white, your face is wise That Love must kiss that Mortal's eyes Who hopes to see fair Arcady? No gold can buy you entrance there; But beggared Love may go all bare No wisdom won with weariness; But love goes in with Folly's dress No fame that wit could ever win; But only Love may lead Love in. To Arcady, to Arcady.
Only Judas has guessed the master aright and has discerned that he comes from the heavenly realm of the god "Barbelo." In the realm of Barbelo, it seems, earthly pains are unknown and the fortunate inhabitants are free from the attentions of the God of the Old Testament. Jesus himself is descended in some fashion from Adam's third son, Seth. With Judas' help, he hopes to guide the seed of Seth back to the realm of Barbelo.
Love suffers long, and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.... And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
"This Constitution does not reflect the thoughts, hopes and aspirations of ordinary people. It does nothing for jobs or economic growth and widens further still the democratic deficit. The gap between the governors and the governed is now a gaping chasm."
Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee, Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears, Our faith triumphant o'er our fears, Are all with thee,-are all with thee!

Come Lord Jesus, come quickly, finish in me the work that Thou has begun; into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit, for Thou has redeemed me. O God of truth, save me Thy servant, who hopes and confides in Thee alone; let Thy mercy, O Lord, be shewn unto me; in Thee have I trusted, O Lord, let me not be confounded for ever.
Now musing o'er the changing scene Farmers behind the tavern screen Collect; with elbows idly press'd On hob, reclines the corner's guest, Reading the news to mark again The bankrupt lists or price of grain. Puffing the while his red-tipt pipe He dreams o'er troubles nearly ripe, Yet, winter's leisure to regale, hopes better times, and sips his ale.john clare
