Sheep run to the slaughterhouse, silent and hopeless, but at least sheep never vote for the butcher who kills them or the people who devour them. More beastly than any beast, more sheepish than any sheep, the voter names his own executioner and chooses his own devourer, and for this precious "right" a revolution was fought.
In misery's darkest cavern known, His useful care was ever nigh Where hopeless anguish pour'd his groan, And lonely want retir'd to die.samuel johnson
[My forces are] unable to control the sea in the Guadalcanal area.... The situation is not hopeless but it is certainly critical.
The imitator dooms himself to hopeless mediocrity. The inventor did it because it was natural to him, and so in him it has a charm. In the imitator something else is natural, and he bereaves himself of his own beauty, to come short of another man's.ralph waldo emerson
Perhaps I am just a hopeless rationalist, but isn't fascination as comforting as solace? Isn't nature immeasurably more interesting for its complexities and its lack of conformity to our hopes? Isn't curiosity as wondrously and fundamentally human as compassion?stephen jay gould
My heart is a flower, budding, blooming, dripping dew, dropping petals all over the place, making a big hopeless mess, stinking things up, waiting for someone to come flying over and suck the pollen out of me. Suck me dry. 'Til I wilt. 'Til I am nothing. 'Til next spring.john s. hall
Carlisle is right in saying that there is no serious danger to be apprehended from Ireland, but what I want to prevent is any, even the slightest, outbreak, and this is only to be done by showing that we have in Ireland a sufficient Saxon force to make any movement on the part of the Celts perfectly hopeless, and sure to bring immediate destruction on those who take part in it. Any outbreak of any kind in Ireland would be magnified by our enemies and rivals, and would greatly weaken our political position in Europe.temple, henry, 3rd viscount palmerston

Trivialism is pretty hopeless as a philosophy , although it is very easy to defend /maintain verbally! The main criticism against it which is pertinent to this project is well expounded, and it is an argument from meaning. It is not clear that a trivialist can mean anything by his utterance or written statement, since there is no recognizable judgment attending sentences.
Nothing is more hopeless than a scheme of merriment.
Ah! Whither, whither shall I fly,A poor unhappy Maid;To hopeless Love and MiseryBy my own Heart betray’d?william congreve
Gradually I began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my orientation. This began, most recognizably, with the rejection of politically-oriented thinking as essentially a hopeless waste of intellectual effort.john forbes nash
It is a pity that this faithful youth is sacrificed in a hopeless situation.gerd von rundstedt
Yes, I am a fatal man, Madame Fribsbi. To inspire hopeless passion is my destiny.william makepeace thackeray
In this business one becomes a connoisseur. I can now see that [Jim] Carrey is a virtuoso, [Chris] Farley is at least hard-working, [Adam] Sandler is hopeless and Pauly Shore bypasses all categories to achieve a kind of transcendent fingernails-on-the-blackboard effect. His appeal must be limited to people whose self-esteem and social skills are so damaged that they find humor, or at least relief, in at last encountering a movie character less successful than themselves.roger ebert
A hopeful sinner is closer to the mercy of Allah than a hopeless worshipper.
God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.chester w. nimitz
The bosses of the Democratic party and the bosses of the Republican party alike have a closer grip than ever before on the party machines in the States and in the Nation. This crooked control of both the old parties by the beneficiaries of political and business privilege renders it hopeless to expect any far-reaching and fundamental service from either.theodore roosevelt
In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. They have formed their own 4–H Club the "hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history".
Orthodoxy gave away the earth into the hands of the state because of its own non-belief in man and mankind , because of its nihilistic attitude towards the world . Orthodoxy does not believe in the religious ordering of human life upon the earth, and it compensates for its own hopeless pessimism by a call for the forceful ordering of it by state authority .
Philosophy seems to me on the whole a rather hopeless business.bertrand russell
