Welsh-born Australian statesman. He
emigrated in 1884 and became Minister for External Affairs
(1904) in the first Labour government and subsequently Prime
Minister (1915^23). He founded the United Australian Party.
William Morris Hughes 1919 Reply to Woodrow Wilson at the Versailles Peace Conference, Jan,
referring to the ANZ AC fatalities in World War I. Wilson had asked
'Mr Hughes, I speak for very many millions of people. For whom
do you speak?'.
