Notes: This is Gollum's account, as interpreted by Gandalf and recounted to Frodo. "It" is the One Ring, which Déagol has found in the Anduin near where Isildur lost it two and a half thousand years before. Sméagol strangles him for it. The scene is dramatised at the start of the film of The Return of the King.
