The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.muhammad ali
“This is today’s puzzle,” he said. “If the act of denial can be taken as proof of the crime, how can an innocent man defend himself?” The tithingmen caught him by the arms. “Come along now, Mr. Emerson, and don’t go trying any philosophy on us.” “Oh, I wouldn’t dream of it,” said Waldo. “Philosophy would be wasted against such sturdy-headed men as you.” “Glad you know it,” said the tithingman proudly. “Wouldn’t want you thinking we weren’t true Christians.”orson scott card
Nothing is wasted, nothing is in vain: The seas roll over but the rocks remain.a. p. herbert
It seems that I have spent my entire time trying to make life more rational and that it was all wasted effort.alfred jules ayer
Cause now that I can see you,I don't think you're worth a second glance. So much for all the promises you made, they served you welland now you're gone and they're wasted on me.So much for your endearing sense of charm, it served you welland now it's gone and you're wasted on me.chris carrabba
A woman gets saturated with the views of the man she sleeps with. After all (Nature or God - no point to argue) did not construct men so that hundreds of thousands of sperm cells would be wasted; they penetrate the body of a woman and remake it in the image and likeness of the man she belongs to.janusz korwin-mikke
Remember that no piece of honestly conducted research is ever wasted, even if it seems so at the time. Put it away in a drawer, and ten, twenty or thirty years down the road, it will come back and help you in ways you never anticipated.anthony james leggett
He has wasted the day, he tells himself, he has wasted the day as he has wasted so many days of his life ... while that huge work with which he has cheated himself, that enormous novel which would lift him at a bound from the impasse in which he stifles, whose dozens of characters would develop a vision of life in bountiful complexity, lies foundering, rotting on a beach of purposeless effort. Notes here, pages there, it sprawls through a formless wreck of incidental ideas and half-episodes; utterly without shape. He is not even a hero for it.norman mailer
They have discovered that the length of time we have now been in commission has rotted our ships and wasted our crews, and that with the completeness of our crews and the soundness of the pristine efficiency of our navy has departed. For it is impossible for us to haul our ships ashore and dry them out because the enemy's vessels being as many or more than our own, we are constantly anticipating an attack.Thucydides
I am not old, — I cannot be old,Though threescore years and tenHave wasted away, like a tale that is told,The lives of other men:I am not old ; though friends and foesAlike have gone to their graves,And left me alone to my joys or my woes,As a rock in the midst of the waves.martin farquhar tupper
Hair got caught in the sunlight darling But I just wasted the day. I knew it would happen this way.zooey deschanel
Ripeness is all; her in her cooling planet Revere; do not presume to think her wasted. Project her no projectile, plan nor man it; Gods cool in turn, by the sun long outlasted.william empson
I've been sleeping through my life Now I'm waking up And I want to stand in the sunshine I have never been ecstatic Had a flower but it never bloomed In the darkness of my wasted youth It was hiding in the shadows Learning to become invisible Uncover mejuliana hatfield
When raging love with extreme pain Most cruelly distrains my heart; When that my tears, as floods of rain, Bear witness of my woful smart; When sighs have wasted so my breath That I lie at the point of death: I call to mind the navy great That the Greeks brought to Troyè town: And how the boisterous winds did beat Their ships, and rent their sails adown; Till Agamemnon 's daughter's blood Appeased the gods that them withstood.howard, henry, earl of surrey
Since Pharaoh’s bits were pushed into the jaws of kings, these dyings patient or impatient, but dyings have happened, by the hundreds of millions; they were all wasted. They taught us to kill others and to die ourselves, but never how to live. Who is “taught to live” by cruelty, suffering, stupidity, and that occupational disease of soldiers, death?Randall Jarrell
Talk not of wasted affection, affection never was wasted; If it enrich not the heart of another, its waters, returning Back to their springs, like the rain, shall fill them full of refreshment; That which the fountain sends forth returns again to the fountain.Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
From 1789 to late in 1791 the French Revolution was an orderly process, and from the summer of 1794 the Republic was an orderly and victorious state. The Terror was not the work of the whole country, but of the town mob which owed its existence and its savagery to the misrule, and social injustice of the ancient regime...More lives were wasted by the British generals alone on the opening day of what is known as the Somme offensive of July, 1916 than in the whole French Revolution from start to finish.
Our economic system, run for profit and waste and based primarily on the extractive industries, is the cause of climate change. We have wasted the earth's treasure and we can no longer exploit it cheaply.
I saw thee in a vision of the night Transfigured; for it seemed that on thy brows The heavens did rest with all their stars, like boughs Laden with blossoms; round thy feet the bright Green waves, like grass, ran rippling, strewn with white Star-fragments of rent petals: wasted vows, And ruined prayers I thought them, such as house In hearts that love and are not loved aright.
I send thee pansies while the year is young, Yellow as sunshine, purple as the night; Flowers of remembrance, ever fondly sung By all the chiefest of the Sons of Light; And if in recollection lives regret For wasted days and dreams that were not true, I tell thee that the "pansy freak'd with jet" Is still the heart's ease that the poets knew Take all the sweetness of a gift unsought, And for the pansies send me back a thought.
I never wanted to know Never wanted to see I wasted my time Till time wasted me I never wanted to go I always wanted to stay 'Cause the persons I am Are the parts that I play So I plot and I plan And I hope and I scheme To the lure of a night Filled with unfinished dreams And I'm holding on tight To a world gone astray As they charge me for years I can't pay
It's such a waste to be wasted in the first place
As you probably know, I'm often accused of intellectual exhibitionism and all forms of elitism. Although I can understand this point of view, it's a rather wasted argument because, if we regard areas of information as being elite and therefore somehow not usable, it means our center ground of activity becomes very, very impoverished .
