No person who is not a great sculptor or painter can be an architect. If he is not a sculptor or painter, he can only be a builder.john ruskin: 1854 Lectures on Architecture and Painting.
It isnecessary to destroy the pretended nobility, entirely literaryand traditional, of marble and bronze The sculptor can use twenty different materials, or even more, in a single work, provided that the plastic emotion requires it.Umberto Boccioni: 1912 In the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture (11 Apr, Milan).
I do not find any difference between painting and sculpture except that the sculptor pursues his work with greater physical fatigue than the painter and the painter pursues his with greater mental fatigue.Leonardo daVinci: Treatise on Painting (published1651, translatedby A P McMahon, 1956).
I've been educated in some pretty lively barrooms, like the Cedar Bar in New York. And I went to high school with Frank Stella and when he got out of college he went to New York and started painting.. ..I was working with sculpture in a kind of dilatory way, and he said to come up and work in his tiny loft when he wasn't there. At the same time I sort of dabbled in a little bit of painting, and a kind of confusion.I was an eye, ear, nose, and throat person too.. ..One day Frank Stella just said to me, “Look, if you paint another painting I’m going to cut off your hands.” I asked, “Can’t I become a good painter?” Frank said, “No, because you are a good sculptor now.” That’s really my formal education.. ..the company of artists is the great education. We educate each other. I've learned from older, wiser people by the old Greek method of sitting down and drinking with them. And that’s how I received my education.carl andre: p. 27 - quote referring to his art-friend, american Minimal Art artist Frank Stella
I was never the kind of painter or sculptor who kept a shop.michelangelo: As quoted in In Our Time : The Artist, BBC Radio 4 (28 March 2002).

Nursing is an art : and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter 's or sculptor 's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble , compared with having to do with the living body..., the temple of God 's spirit ? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.Florence Nightingale in Role Development in Professional Nursing Practice, p.186
To seek in nature the fairest forms and to find the movement which expresses the soul of these forms — this is the art of the dancer. It is from nature alone that the dancer must draw his inspirations, in the same manner as the sculptor, with whom he has so many affinities. Rodin has said: "To produce good sculpture it is not necessary to copy the works of antiquity; it is necessary first of all to regard the works of nature, and to see in those of the classics only the method by which they have interpreted nature." Rodin is right; and in my art I have by no means copied, as has been supposed, the figures of Greek vases, friezes and paintings. From them I have learned to regard nature, and when certain of my movements recall the gestures that are seen in works of art, it is only because, like them, they are drawn from the grand natural source. My inspiration has been drawn from trees, from waves, from clouds, from the sympathies that exist between passion and the storm, between gentleness and the soft breeze, and the like, and I always endeavour to put into my movements a little of that divine continuity which gives to the whole of nature its beauty and its life.isadora duncan: As quoted in Modern Dancing and Dancers (1912) by John Ernest Crawford Flitch, p. 105
A sculptor is supposed to be a dull dog anyway, so why should he not break out in colour sometimes, and in my case I'd as soon be hanged for a sheep as a lamb.jacob epstein: Autobiography (Fletcher & Sons, Norwich, 1963)
