I therefore believe that these and many other movements of our time are in the great long picture of our civilizations related to the loss of an earlier organization of human natures. They are attempts to return to what is no longer there, like poets to their inexistent Muses, and as such they are characteristic of these transitional millennia in which we are imbedded.julian jaynes
In fact, the science of thermodynamics began with an analysis, by the great engineer Sadi Carnot, of the problem of how to build the best and most efficient engine, and this constitutes one of the few famous cases in which engineering has contributed to fundamental physical theory. Another example that comes to mind is the more recent analysis of information theory by Claude Shannon. These two analyses, incidentally, turn out to be closely related.richard feynman
Brambles, in particular, protect and nourish young fruit trees, and on farms bramble clumps (blackberry or one of its related cultivars) can be used to exclude deer and cattle from newly set trees. As the trees (apple, quince, plum, citrus, fig) age, and the brambles are shaded out, hoofed animals come to eat fallen fruit, and the mature trees (7 plus years old) are sufficiently hardy to withstand browsing. Our forest ancestors may well have followed some such sequences for orchard evolution, assisted by indigenous birds and mammals.bill mollison
Apollo at Delphi, through the oracular utterance of his priestess, pronounced Socrates the wisest of men. Of him it is related that he said with sagacity and great learning that the human breast should have been furnished with open windows, so that men might not keep their feelings concealed, but have them open to the view. Oh that nature, following his idea, had constructed them thus unfolded and obvious to the view.vitruvius
A system is said to be coherent if every fact in the system is related every other fact in the system by relations that are not merely conjunctive. A deductive system affords a good example of a coherent system.Lizzie Susan Stebbing (1930) A modern introduction to logic. p.198.
Every part of the system is so related to every other part that any change in one aspect results in dynamic changes in all other parts of the total systemArthur D. Hall and Robert E. Fagen (1956), "Definition of System", in: General Systems, 1 (1956), p. 18: Cited in: Harold Chestnut (1967) Systems Engineering Methods. p.121
A system is a set of objects with relationships between the ... in may be described generally as a complex of elements or components directly or indirectly related in a causal network, ... Also, we are mainly interested in systems within which some process is continually going on, including an interchange with an environment across the boundary. It is generally agreed that when we deal with the more open system with a highly flexible structure, the distinction between the boundaries and the environment becomes a more and more arbitrary matter, dependent upon the purpose of the observer.Arthur D. Hall (1962) as cited in: Addison C. Bennett (1978) Improving management performance in health care institutions: a total systems approach.. p. 40

The Chinese government has asked the relevant party to enhance co-ordination, investigate the cause, locate the missing plane as quickly as possible and properly handle all related matters.Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, quoted on BBC News, "Malaysia Airlines MH370: China in new 'debris' clue", March 12, 2014.
We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are Slavs and our language is closely related to Bulgarian. There is some confusion about our identity.Gyordan Veselinov, (Referring to the citizens of FYROM) Ottawa Citizen, February 24, 1999
For these reasons, I strongly believe that the Constitution accords citizens and press an unconditional freedom to criticize official conduct. It necessarily follows that, in a case such as this, where all agree that the allegedly defamatory statements related to official conduct, the judgments for libel cannot constitutionally be sustained.Justice Arthur Joseph Goldberg, decision, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, Supreme Court of the United States, 376 U.S. 254 (1964)
A pretty little story is related by Stobæus: "A youth who had begun to read geometry with Euclid, when he had learnt the first proposition, inquired, 'What do I get by learning these things?' So Euclid called his slave and said, 'Give him threepence, since he must make gain out of what he learns.'"p. 35 (The Greeks)
Teleology can, and has been, extended to suppose that man is designed not only so as to function biologically in a certain way but also to function ethically in a manner related to his biological nature. ...It is surprising how persistent this belief is.Brian L. Silver, The Ascent of Science Ch.26, "Life: The Molecular Battle" (1998)
Transhumanism is defined as: The intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally improving the human condition through applied reason, especially by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities; and the study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies.Nick Bostrom, in Transhumanism and Transcendence: Christian Hope in an Age of Technological ... (29 September 2011), p.11
The southern French people are more or less isolated from the other western European populations. They are in an intermediate position between the North Africans (Algerians from Algiers and Oran; Tunisians) and the western Europeans populations (France, Spain, and Portugal) (...) These results cannot be attributed to recent events because of the knowledge of the grandparents’ origin in our sample (...) This study reveals that the southern French population from Marseilles is related genetically to the southwestern Europeans and North Africans, who are geographically close. A substantial gene flow has thus probably been present among the populations of these neighboring areas.HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 polymorphisms in southern France and genetic relationships with other Mediterranean populations., Gibert M, Reviron D, Mercier P, Chiaroni J, Boetsch G. As soon as we venture on the paths of the physicist, we learn to weigh and measure , to deal with time and space and mass and their related concepts, and to find more and more our knowledge expressed and our needs satisfied through the concept of number , as in the dreams of Plato and Pythagoras .D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, On Growth and Form (1917)
The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder.Alfred Hitchcock quoted by Dana Ullman in The One-minute (or So) Healer: 500 Simple Ways to Heal Yourself Naturally p.43
The most extraordinary of all the things called miracles, related in the New Testament, is that of the devil flying away with Jesus Christ, and carrying him to the top of a high mountain; and to the top of the highest pinnacle of the temple, and showing him and promising to him all the kingdoms of the world . How happened it that he did not discover America? or is it only with kingdoms that his sooty highness has any interest.thomas paine
