The process has now run full circle: Preaching originates in personal counseling; preaching is personal counseling on a group basis; personal counseling originates in preaching. Personal counseling imparts to the preacher a practical familiarity with human nature which he would not otherwise obtain.
Obey your bishop! “Obey those set over you [Heb 13:17],” the teachers of the Church…. I remind you, my dear friends, of what I said when I was with you: do not receive any outside or unknown Preacher, unless he be sent by your bishop or preaches with the permission of the pope. For “how shall they preach unless they are sent [Rom 10:15]?”bernard of clairvaux
I do not presume to preach to anyone; I do not consider myself a Preacher or a teacher. Were it not that I am responsible for the book, I would prefer that my personality be not named as its author. The greatness of the subjects about which I offer information, relieves and frees me from self-conceit and forbids the plea of modesty.harold w. percival
“I was ordained,” said the Preacher. “No one ordains artists. They ordain themselves.” Just as Taleswapper had expected. The Preacher retreated to authority as soon as he feared his ideas could not stand on their own merit. Reasonable argument was impossible when authority became the arbiter.orson scott card
"The law is an expression of God 's holy will and as such must be honored and loved," said the Preacher piously. "Rubbish," said the Master. "The law is a necessary evil and as such must be cut down to the barest minimum. Show me a lover of the law and I will show you a muttonheaded tyrant ."anthony de mello
In the matter of the maintenance and rearing of children the Anarchists would neither institute the communistic nursery which the State Socialists favor nor keep the communistic school system which now prevails. The nurse and the teacher, like the doctor and the Preacher, must be selected voluntarily, and their services must be paid for by those who patronize them. Parental rights must not be taken away, and parental responsibilities must not be foisted upon others.benjamin tucker
A playwright is a lay Preacher peddling the ideas of his time in popular form.August Strindberg, reported in Colin Jarman (1993). The Book of Poisonous Quotes. McGraw-Hill Professional, p. 103. ISBN 0809236818.
He was an open confuter of both Pope and King, the corrector of monks, the director of priests, the instructor of clerks, the supporter of scholars, a Preacher to the people, a persecutor of the incontinent, the unwearied student of the Scriptures, a hammer and despiser of the Romans. At the table of bodily refreshment he was hospitable, eloquent, courteous, pleasant, and affable; at the spiritual table devout, tearful, and contrite. In the episcopal office he was sedulous , dignified, and indefatigable .Matthew Paris, Hist. Maj. v.407; see also Chronica Majora
Would I describe a Preacher, * * * * I would express him simple, grave, sincere; In doctrine uncorrupt; in language plain, And plain in manner; decent, solemn, chaste, And natural in gesture; much impress'd Himself, as conscious of his awful charge, And anxious mainly that the flock he feeds May feel it too; affectionate in look, And tender in address, as well becomes A messenger of grace to guilty men.william cowper
His words had power because they accorded with his thoughts; and his thoughts had reality and depth because they harmonized with the life he had always lived. It was not mere breath that this Preacher uttered; they were the words of life, because a life of good deeds and holy love was melted into them. Pearls, pure and rich, had been dissolved into the precious draught.Nathaniel Hawthorne, p. 477. (Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers (1895))
If I were not an atheist , I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words . I think he would prefer an honest and righteous atheist to a TV Preacher whose every word is God, God, God, and whose every deed is foul, foul, foul.Isaac Asimov, in I. Asimov: A Memoir (1994)
Considering the avowed purpose of his work, which is rather hortatory than historical, we are fortunate indeed to be given so much first-hand information by this embittered Preacher.J N L Myres, in R G Collingwood and J N L Myres Roman Britain and the English Settlements (1937) p. 329
Trade hardly deems the busy day begun Till his keen eye along the sheet has run; The blooming daughter throws her needle by, And reads her schoolmate's marriage with a sigh; While the grave mother puts her glasses on, And gives a tear to some old crony gone. The Preacher, too, his Sunday theme lays down To know what last new folly fills the town; Lively or sad, life's meanest, mightiest things, The fate of fighting cocks, or fighting kings.charles sprague
