The mythos-over-logos argument points to the fact that each child is born as ignorant as any caveman. What keeps the world from reverting to the Neandertal with each generation is the continuing, ongoing mythos, transformed into logos but still mythos, the huge body of common knowledge that unites our minds as cells are united in the body of man. To feel that one is not so united, that one can accept or discard this mythos as one pleases, is not to understand what the mythos is.
Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.Albert Einstein
Children must be free to think in all directions irrespective of the peculiar ideas of parents who often seal their children's minds with preconceived prejudices and false concepts of past generations. Unless we are very careful, very careful indeed, and very conscientious, there is still great danger that our children may turn out to be the same kind of people we are.brock chisholm
The concept of an independent "spiritual realm" does not augment, for me, the magic of the mystical dimension, whereas to think of this dimension as emergent from our minds makes it all the more wondrous to be a human.ursula goodenough
Color and bite permeate a language designed to rally many men, to destroy some, and to change the minds of others.william safire
Those who prefer their English sloppy have only themselves to thank if the advertisement writer uses his mastery of vocabularyand syntax to mislead their weak minds.Dorothy L(eigh) Sayers
God give us men. The time demandsStrong minds, great hearts, true faith, and willing hands;Men whom the lust of office does not kill;Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy;Men who possess opinions and a will;Men who have honor; men who will not lie;Men who can stand before a demagogueAnd dam his treacherous flatteries without winking;Tall men, sun-browned, who live above the fogIn public duty and in private thinking.josiah gilbert holland
Arguments are like eels: however logical, they may slip from the minds weak grasp unless fixed there by imagery and style.Alain de Botton
And last of all we have the secondary forms of crystals bursting in upon us, and sparkling in the rigidity of mathematical necessity and telling us, neither of harmony of design, usefulness or moral significance, nothing but spherical trigonometry and Napier's analogies. It is because we have blindly excluded the lessons of these angular bodies from the domain of human knowledge that we are still in doubt about the great doctrine that the only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.james clerk maxwell
The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.malcolm (malcolm little) x
What cannot praise effect in mighty minds, When flattery soothes, and when ambition blinds!john dryden
Il n'y a qu'un journal qui puisse venir de poser au me" me moment dans mille esprits la me" me pense e. Only a newspaper can place at the same time in a thousand minds the same thought.
Applause is the spur of noble minds, the end and aim of weak ones.Charles Caleb Colton
Settle it therefore in your minds, as a maxim never to be effaced or forgotten, that atheism is an inhuman, bloody, ferocious system, equally hostile to every useful restraint and to every virtuous affection; that, leaving nothing above us to excite awe, nor round us to awaken tenderness, it wages war with heaven and with earth: its first object is to dethrone God, its next to destroy man.robert hall
People in their right minds never take pride in their talents.harper lee
To maintain this state of things we make all our achievements in science and technology serve organised mass murder; we educate our youth into uniformed killers, deliver the people to the soulless tyranny of a bureaucracy, put men from the cradle to the grave under police supervision, erect everywhere jails and penitentiaries, and fill every land with whole armies of informers and spies. Should not such "order," from whose infected womb are born eternally brutal power, injustice, lies, crime and moral rottennesslike poisonous germs of destructive plagues gradually convince even conservative minds that it is order too dearly bought?rudolf rocker
"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs, and explosions, and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy; and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is, that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.”rod serling
"What good are all these books to you? You can't eat them! How can they make you happy?" "I have always found them very reasonable --they don't change their minds when you aren't looking at them. Each one can always be relied upon to say the same thing." "That sounds like a disadvantage."Peter Greenaway
The forceps of our minds are clumsy forceps, and crush the truth a little in taking hold of it.
There are some sordid minds, formed of slime and filth, to whom interest and gain are what glory and virtue are to superior souls; they feel no other pleasure but to acquire money.jean de la bruyère
[Ron] Paul’s vision is as close to The Good Life as we could hope to come in the current ideological climate. Only tinny ideologues encased in worthless ideological armor – worthless because it exists in the arid arena of their minds, not on earth – would turn their noses up at the prospect of Paul.
Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable open-mindedness, chaotic, confused vulnerability to inform yourself.
Democracy is the power of equal votes for unequal minds.
It is the mark of a mean, vulgar and ignoble spirit to dwell on the thought of food before meal times or worse to dwell on it afterwards, to discuss it and wallow in the remembered pleasures of every mouthful. Those whose minds dwell before dinner on the spit, and after on the dishes, are fit only to be scullions.francis de sales
Soft yielding minds to Water glide away, And sip, with Nymphs, their elemental Tea.Alexander Pope
