The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder.Quoted by Donald Grant in The Globe and Mail, 8 Nov1986.
Jeder Engl a« nder ist eine Insel. Every Englishman is an island.1802 Schriften, II, Fragmente.
On the fifth day following the murder of the ship's officers, land was sighted by the lookout. Whether island or mainland, Black Michael did not know, but he announced to Clayton that if investigation showed that the place was habitable he and Lady Greystoke were to be put ashore with their belongings.Edgar Rice Burroughs
A stone lies in a river; a piece of wood is jammed against it; dead leaves, drifting logs, and branches caked with mud collect; weeds settle there, and soon birds have made a nest and are feeding their young among the blossoming water plants. Then the river rises and the earth is washed away. The birds depart, the flowers wither, the branches are dislodged and drift downward; no trace is left of the floating island but a stone submerged by the water; — such is our personality.cyril connolly
I have always said, that, without commerce...this island could not possibly continue to be great...but, it is the system of rendering every thing commercial; of making merchants and bankers into Lords; of making a set of fund-dealers the distributors of honours and rewards...it is this system that I reprobate.william cobbett
The grief of the keen is no personal complaint for the death of one woman over eighty years, but seems to contain the whole passionate rage that lurks somewhere in every native of the island. In this cry of pain the inner consciousness of the people seems to lay itself bare for an instant, and to reveal the mood of beings who feel their isolation in the face of a universe that wars on them with winds and seas.john millington synge
Guwahati has several places of historical interest with the biggest attraction being the Kamakhya Temple. The city is donned with several places of religious and tourist attractions such as Umananda Temple situated on an island in the middle of the river Brahmaputra , which incidentally is the smallest river island in the world . In addition to the religious sites, there are splendid water fronts and water bodies, which could be developed as places of tourist attractionPlan, in '"City Development Plan Guwahati", p.48
Manhattan. Sometimes from beyond the skyscrapers, across thousands of high walls, the fearful cry of a too-well-known voice finds you in your insomnia in the middle of the night, and you remember that this desert of iron and cement is an island of un-reality.Albert Camus Algerian-French author Albert Camus in "American Journals" (1978).
From the lone shieling of the misty island Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas – Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland, And we in dreams behold the Hebrides! Fair these broad meads, these hoary woods are grand; But we are exiles from our fathers' land."Canadian Boat Song", an anonymous poem first published in Blackwoods Edinburgh Magazine, September 1829, and ostensibly translated from the Gaelic. There has been much debate as to the poem's authorship.
We, the undersigned, visitors to Bermuda, venture respectfully to express the opinion that the admission of automobiles to the island would alter the whole character of the place, in a way which would seem to us very serious indeed. The island now attracts visitors in considerable numbers because of the quiet and dignified simplicity of its life. ... It would, in our opinion, be a fatal error to attract to Bermuda the extravagant and sporting set who have made so many other places of pleasure entirely intolerable to persons of taste and cultivation.Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton, petition to the Bermuda Legislature (c. February 1, 1908); reported in The Papers of Woodrow Wilson, ed. Arthur S. Link (1974), vol. 17, pp. 609–10. The petition, drafted by Wilson, garnered 111 signatures, including Samuel L. Clemens. The Bermuda Legislature did ban all motor cars.
I was born?with ready-made parents and a sister and brother who had already begun their store of experience, inaccessible to me except through their language and the record, always slightly different, of our mother and father, and as each member of the family wasborn, each, ina sensewithmemories onloan, began to supply the individual furnishings of each Was-land, each Is-land, and the hopes and dreams of the Future.Janet Paterson also known as Jean PatersonFrame Frame
One of our universities recently made a survey of the reading habits of the American public; it decided that forty-eight percent of all Americans read, during a year, no book at all. I picture to myself that reader that non-reader, rather; one man out of every two and I reflect, with shame: "Our poems are too hard for him." But so, too, are Treasure island, Peter Rabbit, pornographic novels any book whatsoever.Randall Jarrell
Naw, that's an old trick I picked up at Benny's shooting gallery on Coney island. And if you don't quit stalling, I'll show you some other tricks I learned in Brooklyn.Who: Lou Spinelli
