Scottish  poet  born  in  Port  Glasgow.  He  trained  as   an  army schoolmaster  but  was  dismissed from  army  service  in 1862  for alcoholism.  He  worked  in  London  as  a  poet,  journalist  and critic,  and  published  his  greatest  work  The  City   of  Dreadful Night in1874.
