Scott quoted a famous geneticist, who said, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." I would like to drop one word, so that the quote is true. It should read, "Nothing in biology makes sense in the light of evolution." For example, evolution has no explanation as to why and how around 1.4 million species of animals evolved as male and female. No one even goes near explaining how and why each species managed to reproduce (during the millions of years the female was supposedly evolving to maturity) without the right reproductive machinery.
Explaining just what I had hoped the story to say is very difficult. I suppose, I hoped, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village to shock the story's readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives.shirley jackson
A scientist has the additional responsibility that comes with being a specialist: Explaining science to the public, advising of its usefulness and benefits, and warning of its dangers and disadvantages. This is the responsibility of any specialist.larkin kerwin
And Coleridge, too, has lately taken wing, But, like a hawk encumbered with his hood, Explaining metaphysics to the nation I wished he would explain his explanation.Rochdale
And Coleridge, too, has lately taken wing, But, like a hawk encumber'd with his hood, Explaining metaphysics to the nation – I wish he would explain his Explanation.Samuel Taylor Coleridge
One may wonder, What came before? If space-time did not exist then, how could everything appear from nothing? .:;.:;. Explaining this initial singularity where and when it all began still remains the most intractable problem of modern cosmology .

And the venality of those Judaized is incapable of Explaining anti-Semitism as a social phenomenon, we will call it the anti-Semitic theory.a.c. cuza
I went around to the little schoolhouses, talking like a professor, Explaining our platform. We were lucky if the collection gave us enough for gas to get to the next place. We encouraged questions, and people asked us if it was true we were going to take their farms, like the Soviets in Russia, and did we believe in God.tommy douglas
Know what makes a sentence more than a random list, practice constructing sentences and Explaining what you have done, and you will know how to make sentences forever and you will know too when what you are writing doesn't make the grade because it has degenerated into a mere pile of discrete items.stanley fish
"If Muslim people do not change their mind in spite of the changes of social conditions, and if we supplement Islamic courtesy and law without Explaining and advertising real Islamic beliefs at the same time, then it is impossible to save the minds of the people."ma fuxiang
Criticism will need an injection of humility that is, a recognition of its role as ancillary to the arts, needed only occasionally in a temporary capacity. Since the critic exists only for introducing and Explaining, he must be readily intelligible; he has no special vocabulary: criticism is in no way a science or a system.jacques barzun
It is clear that the building of models is not a purely mechanical process but requires skill of a high order – not merely mathematical skill but a sensitivity to the relative importance of different factors and a critical, almost an artistic, faculty in the selection of behaviour equations which are reasonable, tentative hypotheses in Explaining the behaviour of actual economies.kenneth boulding
Long ago, Sir Isaac Newton gave us three laws of motion, which were the work of genius. But Sir Isaac's talents didn't extend to investing: He lost a bundle in the South Sea Bubble, Explaining later, "I can calculate the movement of the stars, but not the madness of men." If he had not been traumatized by this loss, Sir Isaac might well have gone on to discover the Fourth Law of Motion: For investors as a whole, returns decrease as motion increases.warren buffett
But I have seen my obstacles: trivialities, learning and poetry. This last needs Explaining: the old artist's readiness to dissolve characters into a haze. Characters cannot come alive and fight and guide the world unless the novelist wants them to remain characters.e. m. forster
It was not that the figure had been removed, not that the figures had been swept away, but the symbols for the figures, and in turn the shapes in the later canvases were substitutes for the figures.. ..these new shapes say.. ..what the symbols said. (Rothko, Explaining Seitz his new way of painting during the mid-1940s)mark rothko
They [free market policies] were never based on solid empirical and theoretical foundations, and even as many of these policies were being pushed, academic economists were Explaining the limitations of markets for instance, whenever information is imperfect, which is to say always.joseph e. stiglitz
Your strength as a rationalist is your ability to be more confused by fiction than by reality . If you are equally good at Explaining any outcome, you have zero knowledge.eliezer yudkowsky
The theory of evolution by cumulative natural selection is the only theory we know of that is in principle capable of Explaining the existence of organized complexity.
Taken together, the ability of distress and philosophical orientation to distinguish prospective LGAT participants from non-participants suggests a tentative model for Explaining LGAT participation. Whereas psychological distress or dissatisfaction with current circumstances may be what motivates individuals to seek an available change activity, the kinds of values and worldviews held by individuals may steer them toward a specific change modality (e.g., an LGAT).
It must have appeared almost as improbable to the earlier geologists, that the laws of earthquakes should one day throw light on the origin of mountains, as it must to the first astronomers, that the fall of an apple should assist in Explaining the motions of the moon.Sir Charles Lyell
Lobbyists are in many cases expert technicians and capable of Explaining complex and difficult subjects in a clear, understandable fashion. They engage in personal discussions with Members of Congress in which they can explain in detail the reasons for positions they advocate…. Because our congressional representation is based on geographical boundaries, the lobbyists who speak for the various economic, commercial, and other functional interests of this country serve a very useful purpose and have assumed an important role in the legislative process.
Technical rules are not to be relied upon in Explaining the intention of testators: and yet cases of intention are much embarrassed by authorities.
But I have seen my obstacles: trivialities, learning and poetry. This last needs Explaining: the old artist's readiness to dissolve characters into a haze. Characters cannot come alive and fight and guide the world unless the novelist wants them to remain characters.
[Malebranche] teaches that we see all things in God himself. This is certainly equivalent to Explaining something unknown by something even more unknown. Moreover, according to him, we see not only all things in God, but God is also the sole activity therein, so that physical causes are so only apparently; they are merely occasional causes. ( Recherches de la vérité , Livre VI, seconde partie, chap. 3.) And so here we have essentially the pantheism of Spinoza who appears to have learned more from Malebranche than from Descartes.Arthur Schopenhauer
The synthesis consists in assuming the causes discovered and established as principles, and by them Explaining the phenomena proceeding from them, and proving the explanations.
It is not a story, it is an auditing level. I'm not Explaining it to you, and I could not explain it to you. You don't have a hope of understanding it.
