The evidence shows a growing albeit reluctant acceptance of the rule of law. But time, patience and a genuine commitment not just of the country's leaders towards creating an environment that will allow democracy, human rights and the rule of law to flourish, will be required.
We have overwhelming evidence that available information plus analysis does not lead to knowledge . The management science team can properly analyse a situation and present recommendations to the manager, but no change occurs. The situation is so familiar to those of us who try to practice management science that I hardly need to describe the cases.C. West Churchman (1964) "Managerial acceptance of scientific recommendations". In: California Management Review Vol 7, p.33. cited in: Peter P. Schoderbek (1971) Management systems. p.199
The theater is the primary evidence of a nation's culture.1952 In the NewYorkTimes, 27 Jul.
You really do have to wonder whether a few years from now we’ll look back at the first decade of the 21st century when food prices spiked, energy prices soared, world population surged, tornados plowed through cities, floods and droughts set records, populations were displaced and governments were threatened by the confluence of it all and ask ourselves: What were we thinking? How did we not panic when the evidence was so obvious that we’d crossed some growth/climate/natural resource/population redlines all at once?thomas l. friedman
Having seen how many follow and have followed false religions, and having our reason utterly against many of the principal points of the Bible, we require the most perfect evidence of facts, before we can believe. If you can prove to me that one miracle took place, I will believe that he is a just God who damned us all because a woman ate an apple; and you can't expect greater complaisance than that to be sure.Edward Fitzgerald
The quality which makes his work great is not his scholarship, nor the faculty of narrative which he shared with many contemporaries, but his astonishing power of co-ordinating the fragments of information which came to him through tradition, the relation of friends, or documentary evidence. In an age when little was attempted beyond the registration of fact, he had reached the conception of history. It is in virtue of this conception that the Historia Ecclesiastica still lives after twelve hundred years.bede
Convictions following the admission into evidence of confessions which are involuntary, i.e., the product of coercion, either physical or psychological, cannot stand. This is so not because such confessions are unlikely to be true but because the methods used to extract them offend an underlying principle in the enforcement of our criminal law: that ours is an accusatorial and not an inquisitorial system a system in which the State must establish guilt by evidence independently and freely secured and may not by coercion prove its charges against an accused out of his own mouth.felix frankfurter
Taken as a whole, the Cross Correspondences and the Willet scripts are among the most convincing evidence that at present exists for life after death. For anyone who is prepared to devote weeks to studying them, they prove beyond all reasonable doubt that Meyers, Gurney, and Sidgwick went on communicating after death.colin wilson
Today some evidence arises that UML will more and more be used not as a specification language but as a high level programming language. This has some advantages, as if the concepts of UML are executable, they can immediately be animated and tested, or the generated code even be used as implementation. Thus UML probably will have an implementation-oriented semantics describing this animation.Bernhard Rumpe (1998) "A Note on Semantics (with an Emphasis on UML)." Proceedings of Second ECOOP Workshop on Precise Behavioral Semantics. 1998.
There are frequently things sworn to which are so improbable that one does not believe them. It is one of the commonest things in the world in a criminal case to have the most positive oral evidence given on oath to establish a matter which neither the jury nor the Judge can believe, although it is sworn to.Lord Blackburn, Gardner v. Gardner (1877), L. R. 2 App. Ca. 738.
The Court is to be guided by equity and good conscience, and the best evidence.Lord Hobhouse, Moses v. Parker (1896), L. R. Ap. Ca. , p. 248.
Concessions made for the purpose of settling the business for which the action is brought, cannot be given in evidence; but facts admitted I have always received.Lord Kenyon, Turner v. Railton (1796), 2 Esp. 475.
Our trials by juries are of such consideration in our law that we allow their determination to be best and most advantageous to the subject; and therefore less evidence is required than by the civil law. So said Fortescue in his commendation of the laws of England.Holt, L.C.J., Vaughan's Case (1696), 13 How. St. Tr. 535.
Empirical evidence tends to show that trade liberalisation may entail non-trivial adjustment costs for certain groups.page 47, WTO Annual Report 1998, also quoted in Taking liberties: poor people, free trade and trade justice, Christian Aid, 23 September 2004.
[S]cientists are required to back up their claims not with private feelings but with publicly checkable evidence. Their experiments must have rigorous controls to eliminate spurious effects. And statistical analysis eliminates the suspicion (or at least measures the likelihood) that the apparent effect might have happened by chance alone...Richard Dawkins (1996) "Human gullibility beyond belief,— the “paranormal” in the media". The Sunday Times. 1996-08-25.
