Conceptual models are best thought of as design-tools a way for designers to straighten out and simplify the design and match it to the users' task-domain, thereby making it clearer to users how they should think about the application.
Dinocrates, I appreciate your design as excellent in composition, and I am delighted with it, but I apprehend that anybody who should found a city in that spot would be censured for bad judgement. For as a newborn babe cannot be nourished without the nurse's milk, nor conducted to the approaches that lead to growth in life, so a city cannot thrive without fields and the fruits thereof pouring into its walls.Alexander the Great
And last of all we have the secondary forms of crystals bursting in upon us, and sparkling in the rigidity of mathematical necessity and telling us, neither of harmony of design, usefulness or moral significance, nothing but spherical trigonometry and Napier's analogies. It is because we have blindly excluded the lessons of these angular bodies from the domain of human knowledge that we are still in doubt about the great doctrine that the only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.james clerk maxwell
The grand design of nature perceived broadly in four dimensions, including the forces that move the universe and created man, with special focus on evolution in our own biosphere, is something intrinsically good that it is right to preserve and enhance, and wrong to destroy and degrade.roger wolcott sperry
"The Escalation programmers come from a completely different background, and the codebase is all STL this, boost that, fill-up-the-property list, dispatch the event, and delegate that. I had been harboring some suspicions that our big codebases might benefit from the application of some more of the various “modern” C++ design patterns, despite seeing other large game codebases suffer under them. I have since recanted that suspicion."john d. carmack
The result of [the] cumulative efforts to investigate the cell to investigate life at the molecular level is a loud, clear, piercing cry of ‘design!’ The result is so unambiguous and so significant that it must be ranked as one of the greatest achievements in the history of science. The discovery rivals those of Newton and Einstein, Lavoisier and Schrödinger, Pasteur, and Darwin. The observation of the intelligent design of life is as momentous as the observation that the earth goes around the sun.michael behe
Modern industrial design has advanced at a rapid pace during the last ten years. Its successes are no longer confined to objects which, like automobiles and airplanes, are themselves the product of new conditions. Modern design has also begun to conquer the traditional arts, and the feeling for abstract form, first expressed in our time in the works of Picasso , Braque , Brancusi , Duchamps-Villon in Europe, or Stieglitz , Benton , and Storrs for example in the United States, has finally entered architecture and the decorative arts.Lewis Mumford (1930) "Culture and Machine Art." in: Modern American design. R.L. Leonard, & ?C.A. Glassgold (eds.), ?American Union of Decorative Artists and Craftsmen. p. 9
Architecture has two meanings depending upon its contextual usage: (1) A formal description of a system, or a detailed plan of the system at component level to guide its implementation; (2) The structure of components, their interrelationships, and the principles and guidelines governing their design and evolution over time. The Open Group (2007) TOGAF 2007 Edition: (incorporating 8.1.1). p. 5
I don't design clothes, I design dreams.1986 In the NewYork Times,19 Apr.
Much of the early engineering development of digital computers was done in universities. A few years ago, the view was commonly expressed that universities had played their part in computer design, and that the matter could now safely be left to industry. [...] Apart from the obvious functions of keeping in the public domain material that might otherwise be hidden, universities can make a special contribution by reason of their freedom from commercial considerations, including freedom from the need to follow the fashion.maurice wilkes
The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design. To the naive mind that can conceive of order only as the product of deliberate arrangement, it may seem absurd that in complex conditions order, and adaptation to the unknown, can be achieved more effectively by decentralizing decisions and that a division of authority will actually extend the possibility of overall order. Yet that decentralization actually leads to more information being taken into account.friedrich hayek
The designer of today, in most branches of art and particularly in the field of industrial design, needs more than vision and inspiration. This can be seen easily by anyone who will trouble himself to analyze the motif of some costly production and consider its chance to endure on the basis of artistic worth, rather than mere excellence of technical finish.Industrial Arts and Vocational Education. Vol. 11, 1922, p. 54
If we think about things having multiple lives, cradle to cradle, we could design things that can go back to either nature or back to industry forever.William McDonough (2008) "William McDonough: Godfather of Green" WNYC Studio 360, 18 March 2008)
All architecture is design but not all design is architecture. Architecture represents the significant design decisions that shape a system, where significant is measured by cost of change.Grady Booch (2006) "On design" cited in: Frank Buschmann, ?Kevlin Henney, ?Douglas C. Schmidt (2007) Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture, On Patterns and Pattern Languages. p. 214
With the increasing use of electronic devices for the navigation and control of aircraft, A.R. C. has long encouraged the “Systems Engineering” of these devices into the basic design of aircraft.Advertising text by Aircraft Radio Corporation in: Flying. Dec 1946. Vol. 39, nr. 6. p.131
You wish to be great , begin from the least. You are thinking to construct some mighty fabric in height; first think of the foundation of humility . And how great soever a mass of building one may wish and design to place above it, the greater the building is to be, the deeper does he dig his foundation.Sermon 19:2 on the New Testament
The key books about object-oriented graphical modeling languages appeared between 1988 and 1992. Leading figures included Grady Booch [Booch,OOAD]; Peter Coad [Coad, OOA], [Coad, OOD]; Ivar Jacobson (Objectory) [Jacobson, OOSE]; Jim Odell [Odell]; Jim Rumbaugh (OMT) [Rumbaugh, insights], [Rumbaugh, OMT]; Sally Shlaer and Steve Mellor [Shlaer and Mellor, data], [Shlaer and Mellor, states]:;; and Rebecca Wirfs-Brock (Responsibility Driven design) [Wirfs-Brock].Martin Fowler (2004) A Brief Guide to the Standard Object Modeling Language. p.7
