State of the Union address (25 January 1984)
The greatest challenge to any thinker is stating the problem in a way that will allow a solution.Bertrand Russell, as quoted in Crainer's The Ultimate Book of Business Quotations (1997), p. 258.
Great thinkers build their edifices with subtle consistency. We do our intellectual forebears an enormous disservice when we dismember their visions and scan their systems in order to extract a few disembodied “gems” thoughts or claims still accepted as true. These disarticulated pieces then become the entire legacy of our ancestors, and we lose the beauty and coherence of older systems that might enlighten us by their unfamiliarity and their consequent challenge in our fallible (and complacent) modern world.stephen jay gould

...throughout the world , except in the abodes of the guilty , goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger , are turning the tide of world war by their prowess and their devotion.Winston Churchill, in The Most Dangerous Enemy: An Illustrated History of the Battle of Britain, p.165

I thank the Prime Minister for his remarks about me. Debating with him at the Dispatch Box has been exciting, fascinating, fun, an enormous challenge and, from my point of view, wholly unproductive in every sense. I am told that in my time at the Dispatch Box I have asked the Prime Minister 1,118 direct questions, but no one has counted the direct answers—it may not take long.william hague
No serious challenge on the Left exists to Third Way thinking anywhere in the world. This is hardly surprising as globalisation punishes hard any country that tries to run its economy by ignoring the realities of the market or prudent public finances. In this strictly narrow sense, and in the urgent need to remove rigidities and incorporate flexibility in capital, product and labour markets, we are all "Thatcherite" now.Peter Mandelson
Haile Selassie was not an evil man, but his priorities were misplaced. He was so concerned with establishing a strong central government and modernizing the country that he failed to meet the challenge of natural disaster... It was his false pride, this lack of courage to admit mistakes, that brought about his downfall.selassie, haile i, of ethiopia
Love is the expansion of two natures in such fashion that each include the other, each is enriched by the other. Love is an echo in the feelings of a unity subsisting between two persons which is founded both on likeness and on complementary differences. Without the likeness there would be no attraction; without the challenge of the complementary differences there could not be the closer interweaving and the inextinguishable mutual interest which is the characteristic of all deeper relationships.felix adler
... to challenge the objective nature of being. The notion of being is presented here as relative rather than irrefutable: it is merely a projection of our minds, a whim of our thinking. The mind has the right to establish being wherever it cares to and for as long as it likes. There is no intrinsic difference between being and fantasy.jean dubuffet
We are beginning to realize that even the most fortunate people are living far below capacity, and that most human beings develop not more than a small fraction of their potential mental and spiritual efficiency. The human race, in fact, is surrounded by a large area of unrealized possibilities, a challenge to the spirit of exploration.Julian Huxley, "Transhumanism" in New Bottles for New Wine (1957) p. 13 - 17
Consequently, American businesses must meet the challenge of poorly- educated people in today's workforce by strengthening employee training programs.Gregory Balestrero Public power (1990) Volume 48. American Public Power Association. p.9.
The challenge of securing safe and plentiful water for all is one of the most daunting challenges faced by the world today. . . . Too often, where we need water we find guns.Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General. Awake! magazine, November 8, 2008; Watching the World.
The continued existence of wildlife and wilderness is important to the quality of life of humans. Our challenge for the future is that we realize we are very much a part of the earth's ecosystem, and we must learn to respect and live according to the basic biological laws of nature.Jim Fowler, statement
These trends gave antiabortionists an advantage... they present a sophisticated philosophical and political challenge. Caring societies, they say, seek to expand inclusion into "the human community." Those once excluded, such as women and minorities, are now equal. Why not welcome the fetus (who, after all, is us) into our community?Frances Kissling and Kate Michelman, abortion activists, Abortion's battle of messages, LA Times, 1/22/2008.
