Over the door of Shakespeare's theatre, The Globe, Bankside, London, was a figure of Hercules; under this figure was the above quotation. It probably suggested "All the world's a stage"; reported in Hoyt's New Cyclopedia Of Practical Quotations (1922), p. 911-17.
